British Mother Rescued in Malawi After Kidnapping

A British mother, Nusrat Osman, 47, who was kidnapped in Malawi, has been safely returned home after a rescue operation. Osman was abducted last Friday in the Mount Pleasant area of Blantyre. Her brother, Shobi Jiwa, confirmed her safe return.

Osman, a mother of two from Leicester, was working as an auditor in Malawi after relocating for her husband's job. During the operation to rescue her, a senior police officer, Deputy Inspector General Noel Kayira, was shot but survived and is reported to be out of danger. Jiwa expressed gratitude to Kayira, stating he "took a bullet to his body and bravely saved our sister Nusrat."

The Malawi Police Service had offered a reward of K30 million for credible information leading to Osman's rescue and the subsequent arrest, prosecution, and conviction of those responsible. Prior to her rescue, Jiwa described the kidnapping as a "traumatising" event, recounting that four armed men dragged Osman out of her car. He noted that his sister had been missing for five days with no contact. Osman's husband told a local outlet that he had no idea of her whereabouts or motive for the abduction, stating his wife was an auditor and he had no known issues with anyone.

Malawi Police had previously reported that four men, believed to be using a grey Nissan Dualis, snatched Osman from the street while she was on her way to take her children to school. Police had not yet commented on the latest developments regarding her rescue.
