British Mother Drowns in Bahamas While Attempting to Rescue Children
A 36-year-old woman died in Bimini after a strong current swept her two children away during a snorkeling expedition.
A British woman has died in the Bahamas after entering the water in an attempt to save her two children who were swept out to sea by a strong current. The 36-year-old was snorkeling with her husband and their sons when the incident occurred.
Bystanders were able to rescue the two boys from the water, but struggled to reach the mother due to the powerful currents. She was pulled from the water, and CPR was administered. Alice Town police were alerted around 10 a.m. Wednesday that the woman was found unresponsive at the ferry dock in Bimini. By the time officers arrived, she had already been transported for medical treatment. Doctors at a local clinic later pronounced her dead.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the official cause of death. Linty Stuart, owner of L&A Water Taxi, who was captaining the boat involved, told ZNS that he saw the boys and their mother in the water. He confirmed that while the children were brought back to safety, the mother was more difficult to reach.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has been approached for comment.
