British Mother Dies Rescuing Sons from Strong Current in Bahamas
Leanne Gregory, 36, was on a family snorkeling trip when her children were swept away by a powerful current, leading to her tragic death.
A 36-year-old mother from Nottinghamshire, England, died while attempting to rescue her two sons from a strong current during a family snorkeling excursion in the Bahamas. The incident occurred on North Bimini Island, authorities announced last Tuesday.
Leanne Gregory was with her husband and two sons when the powerful current swept the children away. In an effort to save them, Gregory was also pulled into the current. She was eventually rescued and transported to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where CPR was administered. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at a local clinic.
Both children survived the incident. The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that foul play is not suspected, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Gregory's husband, Nathan, described her as his "childhood sweetheart" and "soulmate" in a Facebook tribute. According to the BBC, he shared on a GoFundMe page that his wife held onto one of their sons until he was rescued but ultimately lacked the strength to save herself. He stated, "My boys had to witness something nobody should ever have to see of any age, but they know [their mom] died an absolute hero."
Kim Jones, Gregory's mother-in-law, told The Telegraph that her son attempted to perform the "kiss of life" on Gregory. "It is devastating," Jones said. "They were in difficulty, and she went out to rescue them. But the waters were too rough and choppy for her."
Jones further described Gregory as "the best mom in the world, just brilliant — a lovely woman who would do anything for anyone." The couple, who had been together for over 20 years, were on a two-week vacation at the time of the incident.
This tragedy follows other recent vacation-related incidents, including the death of a Minnesota pastor who suffered a severe spinal cord injury after falling into a pool on a cruise ship in Italy and a Brazilian university official killed by falling roofing material at a Frank Lloyd Wright landmark in Arizona.
