British Mother Dies in Bahamas While Rescuing Children
A 36-year-old mother has been hailed a hero after she drowned while attempting to save her two sons from a strong current in the Bahamas.
Leanne Gregory, from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, died on Tuesday during a snorkeling expedition with her husband and sons in the southern part of the island. According to reports, a strong current swept her two sons away. Gregory attempted to rescue them, but was herself overcome by the water.
Her husband, Nathan Gregory, 36, attempted to resuscitate his wife, but it was too late. He described the incident in a GoFundMe post, stating that his wife "held him until he was rescued but didn't have the energy to save herself, after a freak wave swept the boat away from her."
He further elaborated on the profound loss, writing, "This loss is unimaginable for our family, she was our foundation, our support, she made us who we are. We were childhood sweethearts, my one and only. 22 years into our relationship at only 36-years-old. We had our whole lives ahead of us and it has all been taken away."
Mr. Gregory expressed gratitude that his sons were rescued safely and acknowledged the assistance of those who helped at the scene and during the resuscitation efforts. "But mainly thankful to my brave, amazing wife for keeping my boy above the water even as you were sinking," he wrote.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the incident, stating that officers were alerted to an unresponsive female at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Preliminary reports indicate that Gregory was snorkeling with her family when the current swept the children away. She was subsequently rescued and transported to a clinic where she was pronounced dead. Foul play is not suspected, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas. We are in contact with the local authorities and providing support to her family."
