More than 1,400 British military veterans have been instructed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to repay significant sums, amounting to tens of thousands of pounds each, following an overpayment of their pensions. The MoD identified these pension discrepancies in November 2024, but veterans were only notified of the errors this year.

Approximately 400 of these overpayments are linked to the military's final-salary pension schemes, which provide a lifelong, inflation-adjusted income. Reports suggest that in some instances, these annual inflation increases may have been applied twice. An additional 1,000 veterans are affected by other types of pension overpayment errors, according to information obtained through a Freedom of Information request by the Forces Pension Society.

The source of the errors, whether human or technological, has not been clarified. The MoD acknowledged that the situation could cause distress for those affected, but stated that legally, it is obligated to recover the excess funds distributed.

A spokesperson for the MoD stated, "Where payments have been made in genuine error, we have a responsibility to recover taxpayer funds. We will always seek to do so in a sensitive and proportionate way, including through tailored repayment plans and financial and welfare support from Veterans Services."

Conservative politicians have criticized the handling of the situation, with pensions spokesman Helen Whately calling it "straightforward incompetence." She added, "Men and women who served this country are now being told to hand back money they had every reason to believe was theirs, through no fault of their own."
