George Mason, a British citizen living in a specialist care facility in Sweden, is facing deportation, a situation his family describes as "awful" and "traumatic." His daughter, Michelle Torossian, expressed deep concern about the potential impact on her father's health if authorities attempt to forcibly remove him.
Torossian stated that doctors have advised Swedish authorities that relocating Mason to the UK could pose a "danger to his life." She emphasized the family's desire for her father to be treated with dignity during this vulnerable period, calling the process "ruthless and harsh."
The situation stems from the UK's departure from the European Union on January 31, 2020. Following Brexit, British citizens lost their automatic right of residence within EU countries, including Sweden. While a transitional period allowed for applications under a withdrawal agreement, this period concluded on December 31, 2021.
Mason's health conditions necessitated the appointment of a 'god man,' a legally appointed trustee, who was granted power of attorney to manage his affairs. Documents from the Swedish Migration Agency indicate that an application for permanent residency for Mason was submitted on December 21, 2021. However, this application was reportedly refused because the necessary documentation to support his residency claim was not provided.
Mason resides in a care facility, and his family is concerned that a forced removal could exacerbate his dementia and endanger his life. They are appealing for a humane resolution that prioritizes his well-being and dignity.
