British Man's Mysterious Death in Italy Under Investigation, Suicide Ruled Out

Italian investigators are probing the mysterious death of Benjamin John Braithwaite, a 35-year-old man from Leeds, whose naked body was discovered near an off-grid community in Sicily.

Braithwaite was found around 3 a.m. on September 13 in the countryside between Noto and Canicattini Bagni, in the province of Syracuse. While initial reports suggested suicide might be a possibility, investigators have reportedly moved away from that theory. Current lines of inquiry include the possibility that his death may have resulted from an erotic game gone wrong.

An autopsy has been performed, but preliminary findings have not provided a definitive cause of death. Toxicology and other examinations are ongoing to reconstruct Braithwaite's final hours.

Investigators learned that Braithwaite had arrived in the area several days before his death and had become involved with a group living an alternative lifestyle in abandoned farm buildings and makeshift camps. His body was discovered near a farmhouse where members of this community had been staying. A rope was found nearby, and initial medical examinations revealed marks around his neck, prompting an examination into potential asphyxiation.

Police are also investigating whether drugs or other substances may have been involved in his death. Reports of unusual objects found in the vicinity, including imagery described as a 'goat's head,' bottles of psychotropic drugs, and other items suggesting rituals, have fueled speculation. However, authorities have emphasized that there is currently no evidence linking Braithwaite's death to an esoteric or occult ritual.

A spokesman for the Carabinieri confirmed that a drawing with 'esoteric connotations' was found on a wall near the property, but it was not close to where the body was discovered. The investigation is being led by the Carabinieri in Noto and coordinated by prosecutors in Syracuse.

At this time, no suspects are under investigation, though Italian reports indicate that investigators are examining several possible explanations for the death. Braithwaite was reportedly found after individuals at a gathering at the rural site noticed he had left.

The mayor of Canicattini Bagni, Paolo Amenta, described the individuals living in the communal farmhouses as graduates who had chosen to live in isolation. He expressed hope that the investigations would clarify the circumstances of Braithwaite's death.

Braithwaite's family has been informed, and the British Foreign Office has stated it is providing support to them and is in contact with local authorities.
