Malcolm Timbrell, 70, recounted his survival of a devastating wildfire that swept through the village of Bédar in Spain's Almeria province last Thursday, claiming the lives of his wife, Annette Kilgore, and at least 12 friends and neighbors. The aggressive blaze destroyed the couple's home and forced an attempted evacuation.
As flames neared their properties, Timbrell and his wife, along with neighbors, attempted to flee by car. However, Timbrell made a split-second decision to return to their house to rescue their cats, Charlie and Lilly. After gathering the pets, he rejoined the group, only to find they had exited their vehicles.
"My wife and our other seven friends and neighbours – against me screaming at them not to – decided the only safe way was to walk out in front of the firewall," Timbrell told the BBC. He later learned the fire front was advancing at speeds exceeding 20 kilometers per hour, leaving the group with no chance of escape.
Timbrell sought refuge in one of six abandoned cars. While four vehicles nearby combusted, his miraculously survived the intense heat. The flames eventually passed, and he was rescued by emergency fire crews.
"It's something you could never imagine could happen, and when it does, and you're the only survivor in this situation, what can I do?" Timbrell stated. "We are just waiting now for DNA clarification, and after that I will probably just fall apart."
He described his wife as a "happy" and "outgoing" person with whom he shared an "amazing" life. Eight bodies were later discovered on a path near their home. The total number of confirmed British victims in the wildfire has risen to five, including a 93-year-old woman who died in the hospital. Expat couple Pete and Fran Gillam are also among the identified British victims.
The blaze, which began late last Thursday in a semi-arid region near the Sierra de Los Filabres mountains, also claimed the lives of individuals from France, Belgium, and Spain. Spanish authorities initially reported an American victim but later corrected this to a British national. Harrowing images have emerged of charred vehicles on dirt tracks where some victims were trapped while attempting to evacuate.
