British Man Fights for Life in Spain After Seizure-Related Fall

A British man is in critical condition in Spain after a seizure led to a fall that caused a severe head injury. Paul Grant, 43, had developed seizures earlier this year following a violent mugging.

Grant had taken his family on a holiday to Lanzarote in an attempt to recover from the trauma of the attack. However, on their first night at an all-inclusive hotel, Grant suffered a seizure and fell, striking his head against a wall. His mother discovered him bleeding heavily in the hotel hallway.

He was initially taken to a local hospital, where he was placed in a medically induced coma due to liver and kidney failure. Doctors determined that the hospital was not equipped to handle the severity of his injuries, which included significant brain pressure. Grant was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Gran Canaria.

Upon arrival, doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain, a procedure that involved removing the right side of his skull. His sister, Kimberly Sharp, stated that doctors informed the family that without the surgery, Grant would likely not survive.

Despite the successful surgery, Grant remains in the intensive care unit and is not yet out of danger. A portion of his brain has sustained severe damage. He is still heavily sedated but is not on life support. His family has incurred significant expenses for flights and accommodation to remain by his bedside, with Sharp setting up a GoFundMe page that has raised over £5,000 to help cover these costs.

"He just wanted to make some nice family memories and have a good time," Sharp said. "A couple of months ago he got beaten up in Newcastle and had a seizure. He was jumped for his wallet and his phone, he was put into hospital and hasn't been the same since."
