A 31-year-old British national, Joshua Cammidge, has been charged under the National Security Act with assisting Russian intelligence services. Cammidge was arrested by Counter Terrorism Policing London officers, with support from Wiltshire Police, at an address in Swindon last Friday.

Following his arrest, Cammidge was taken to a London police station. Searches were conducted at a separate address in Swindon. On Saturday, he was further arrested and detained under the National Security Act on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence service.

He has now been charged with two offenses: assisting a foreign intelligence service, contrary to section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, and preparatory conduct, contrary to section 18 of the National Security Act 2023. Cammidge is accused of intending to commit or engage in conduct to prepare an act of sabotage.

Prosecutors allege that Cammidge communicated with and received instructions from an individual believed to be linked to the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group reportedly controlled by Russia’s military intelligence agency. Cammidge is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
