British Jihadi Bride Linked to Berlin Attack Arrested in Syria

Sharmeena Begum, a British national who joined the Islamic State (ISIS) and is believed to have recruited Shamima Begum into the terrorist group, has been arrested in Syria. Her apprehension comes after German authorities investigating a terror attack at the Berlin Pride event in July found she had exchanged messages with the perpetrator, Abdul Ballout.

Ballout drove a van into a crowd, killing one woman and injuring 29 others before being shot dead by police. German investigators identified Sharmeena Begum, 27, after discovering she had communicated with Ballout prior to the attack. It is understood that Ballout sent her a video of his oath of allegiance to ISIS, which she was allegedly supposed to relay to the group's propaganda chief for online dissemination.

Sharmeena Begum, who left her east London home for Syria in December 2014 as a schoolgirl, was tracked to a hideout in Syria by a Western intelligence service after German police passed her contact information to them. Her father, Mohammed Nizam Uddin, expressed relief that his daughter was alive, stating he had believed she was dead. "I did not know she had been arrested. No one from the police or the Government has told me anything about her for years," he said.

Radicalized after her mother's death in 2013, Sharmeena Begum is said to have persuaded fellow Bethnal Green Academy students, including Shamima Begum, Amira Abase, and Kadiza Sultana, to join her in Syria in February 2015. While Shamima Begum has since disavowed the caliphate, Sharmeena Begum reportedly played an active operational role within ISIS and remained unrepentant. In 2023, she criticized Shamima Begum as a "failure and non-believer."

Following the defeat of ISIS, tens of thousands of its members' wives and children have been held in internment sites run by Kurdish forces in Syria. Sharmeena Begum is believed to have escaped from Al-Hol, one of the largest sites, before its closure earlier this year. She is also alleged to have raised approximately £2,400 for ISIS online through bitcoin donations, purportedly to aid the escape of women and children from the camps.

She is expected to face terrorism charges in Syria, where she could potentially face the death penalty. British officials confirmed that Sharmeena Begum was stripped of her citizenship years ago, similar to Shamima Begum, absolving the UK government of any obligation to assist her.

Extradition to Germany might offer her a path to avoid a death sentence, though investigators have not yet found evidence that she directly participated in planning the Berlin attack. Her arrest accounts for all four Bethnal Green schoolgirls who joined ISIS; Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase are believed to have died in Syria, while Shamima Begum remains in the Al-Roj camp.

In a separate development, Tareena Shakil, another British woman who joined ISIS with her son, has reportedly reinvented herself as an influencer. Shakil, who was previously jailed for joining ISIS and encouraging terror acts on social media, now posts content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, discussing dating advice and personal resilience.
