British Father Pleads Guilty in Son's Cyprus Hotel Balcony Death

A British father has been convicted of causing death by a dangerous act after his two-year-old son fell from a hotel window in Cyprus. The 37-year-old, an executive from Essex, entered his plea at Paphos District Court.

He was arrested on July 12, hours after his son plunged approximately 33 feet from a windowsill at the five-star King Evelthon Hotel. The child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Paphos General Hospital.

According to reports, the father placed his son on a windowsill while waiting for a lift, believing the window to be closed. He now faces a potential prison sentence of up to four years.

The father was initially held without charge for eight days. Toxicology reports indicated a small amount of alcohol in his blood, equivalent to one or two drinks. He was later released on bail amounting to €30,000 (£25,750) and was initially banned from leaving the island, though this was temporarily lifted to allow him to attend his son's burial.

The toddler's mother, a 38-year-old health professional, and his five-year-old sister returned to the UK at the end of July. The father was reportedly forced to inform his daughter of her brother's death over FaceTime while in custody.

Friends described the toddler as a "truly special, easy-going little boy" who brought "so much joy" to those around him.

Last week, on what would have been the boy's third birthday, the father was informed that the Cyprus attorney general had rejected an appeal to drop the case on humanitarian grounds. His lawyer had argued that continuing the prosecution would only deepen the family's trauma and that there was no public interest in doing so.

The King Evelthon Hotel has come under scrutiny due to its safety record, with the toddler's death being the third involving a British tourist at the resort in four years. In July 2022, 21-year-old Ben Woods drowned in the hotel's pool while playing volleyball. The following year, six-year-old Ruaridh Nairne also drowned in the pool. Reports indicate another woman died while swimming at the resort in 2024.

UK health and safety guidelines typically recommend that hotel windows large enough for a child to fall through should be restricted to an opening of 10cm or less. In Cyprus, regulations require only that windows be above a ledge of at least 1.1 meters, a standard the King Evelthon Hotel reportedly meets.

The father is scheduled to be sentenced on October 5.
