British Expat Details Astonishingly Low Cost of Living in Thailand

Mac Haycock, a 31-year-old from Wolverhampton, has revealed the significant cost savings he experiences living in Pattaya, Thailand, a stark contrast to his previous life in the UK. Haycock, who moved to Thailand three years ago, now rents a three-bedroom house for less than £600 per month, with his weekly food shop costing approximately £37.50.

Initially planning a short trip to Southeast Asia to film YouTube videos and work in bars, Haycock decided to stay in Thailand after falling in love with the country. He now resides near the center of Pattaya with his girlfriend and their two cats. His monthly expenses include rent, household bills totaling around £25, and food costs of approximately £150. He notes that even with social activities, transportation, and other expenses, his money extends much further than it would in the UK.

Haycock highlighted the difference in additional expenses between the UK and Thailand. He pointed out that in the UK, costs like car insurance, road tax, MOTs, National Insurance, and expensive phone contracts contribute significantly to monthly bills. He estimates a comparable mobile phone plan in Thailand costs around £20 per month, versus potentially £100 in the UK for a new iPhone with a decent data plan. Haycock stated that renting a comparable property in a major UK city would cost more than three times his current rent, and with added bills, could be four times as much.

Since settling in Thailand, Haycock has opened his own bar in Pattaya and reports earning more than he did in the UK. He believes this income has enabled him to build a lifestyle that would have been difficult to achieve back home. He described his current lifestyle as a significant improvement, allowing for a comfortable home, good food, regular nights out, and transportation, all for the same amount he might spend on rent, food, bills, and going out in the UK.

His daily routine has shifted from his previous nine-to-five management roles in bars and restaurants in Britain. Haycock now wakes at his leisure, prepares breakfast, and spends his day filming or editing content related to Pattaya's nightlife and the experience of moving to Thailand. Evenings are often spent at his bar, socializing with customers. He emphasizes the sense of freedom and opportunity he values most about living in Thailand, stating he doesn't plan to return to the UK unless circumstances change significantly.

Despite his success, Haycock advises those considering a similar move to secure a reliable online income before relocating. He recommends finding remote work that pays based on UK or international salaries to fund their lifestyle in Thailand. He cautioned against arriving without a plan to find employment, citing increased competition for jobs within the country.

One Brit left his life in the UK behind to move to sunny Pattaya in Thailand

Haycock intends to continue traveling around Thailand and other parts of the world with his girlfriend, documenting their experiences through his filming work. He expressed that he never anticipated achieving his current lifestyle or the success he has found in Thailand.
