British Cyclist Matthew Richardson Sent Home From World Championships Amid Misconduct Allegations

Matthew Richardson, a prominent cyclist for Great Britain, has been withdrawn from the World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai due to allegations of misconduct. The 27-year-old athlete is facing an investigation into his behavior towards teammates, according to reports.

British Cycling confirmed Richardson's withdrawal in a statement, stating, "British Cycling can confirm that Matt Richardson has been withdrawn from the Great Britain Cycling Team squad for the upcoming 2026 Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China." The organization declined to comment further on the ongoing process, citing fairness to all involved.

Richardson, who previously represented Australia, switched his allegiance to Great Britain in 2024. This move was accompanied by a ban from AusCycling for life, citing his conduct prior to the defection, including withholding information about his switch and attempting to take team property. At the time of his defection, Richardson expressed a desire to pursue new dreams and chase the feeling of competing for his country of birth, having grown up watching British cycling legends.

He secured two silver medals and a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics after switching from Australia. His relationship with Emma Finucane, a fellow British cyclist, began in February 2024. Finucane had kept Richardson's defection plans secret for months, understanding the potential repercussions for his Olympic aspirations. The couple met at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and now reside in Manchester, England, where they train together.

Richardson's career has also been marked by a serious injury sustained in July, when he was involved in a crash during the Keirin World Series that ruled him out of the Commonwealth Games. The incident left him unable to walk for four days and resulted in a broken scapula and bruised hip.

Finucane, known as the 'world's fastest female cyclist' after setting a record 200m sprint time in February, remains in Shanghai for the championships while Richardson has returned home amid the controversy.
