British Cyclist Matthew Richardson Sent Home from World Championships Amid Misconduct Allegations

British cyclist Matthew Richardson has been withdrawn from the World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai due to allegations of misconduct, British Cycling confirmed. The 27-year-old was considered a strong medal contender before his unexpected departure.

Richardson, who began a relationship with British cyclist Emma Finucane in February 2024, was sent home from the competition following a complaint regarding his behavior towards teammates. Reports suggest the investigation into his conduct was prompted by concerns raised by fellow athletes, with one rider telling The Times that Richardson did not moderate his behavior even when interacting with athletes from minority backgrounds.

British Cycling stated that they take allegations of harassment, bullying, or discrimination "extremely seriously" and investigate all concerns thoroughly. The organization declined to comment further on the ongoing process.

This incident marks another significant controversy for Richardson, who controversially switched his racing allegiance from Australia to Great Britain in August 2024. He cited personal reasons and a desire to pursue new dreams as his motivation for the change, despite having represented Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and winning two silver medals and a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics for the nation.

His defection led to a lifetime ban from AusCycling, which cited his conduct prior to switching, including withholding information about his decision and attempting to take team property to Great Britain. At the time, Richardson expressed gratitude for his time with AusCycling and stated that his decision was a long-held ambition.

Richardson and Finucane, who met at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and are now based in Manchester, have become a prominent couple in British cycling. Finucane previously supported Richardson through the fallout of his switch from Australia, keeping his plans secret for months. She is known for her disciplined approach to the sport, having grown up in a military family.

Prior to this expulsion, Richardson had overcome a serious injury sustained in July when he was involved in a crash during the Keirin World Series in Japan. The incident ruled him out of the Commonwealth Games and left him with a broken scapula and bruised hip, requiring him to be transported from the velodrome in an ambulance. He has spoken about the incident, noting he has not received an apology from the cyclist involved.
