A British family has issued a warning after their ten-year-old son, Jude, fell critically ill with E.coli during a holiday in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. What initially seemed like a common stomach bug, dubbed 'Egypt belly,' rapidly escalated to kidney failure, necessitating hospitalization and dialysis.

Caroline Lawton, Jude's mother, reported that her son began experiencing an upset stomach on the day before their scheduled departure. While she initially attributed his symptoms to 'Egypt belly,' her concern grew when Jude started passing fresh blood in his stools. Upon returning to the UK, Jude was admitted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where he tested positive for STEC E.coli. Doctors later confirmed that his infection had developed into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication that can lead to kidney failure and other organ damage.

IMAGE7 Jude required immediate treatment, including dialysis and a blood transfusion, to support his failing kidneys. After two weeks of intensive care, his kidney function began to improve, and he was eventually discharged to continue his recovery at home. Ms. Lawton noted that Jude had only eaten outside of their all-inclusive hotel once during the 12-night trip.

IMAGE6 She described the frightening progression of his illness, from initial mild symptoms to severe fatigue, swelling, and a complete inability to urinate. The severity of his condition became apparent when he was immediately taken for dialysis upon waking from surgery, indicating his kidneys had ceased to function.

IMAGE3 While Jude's condition has stabilized, his recovery is ongoing, and he will be monitored for the next five years due to the potential long-term effects of HUS, which can include chronic high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attacks. Ms. Lawton is sharing their experience to raise awareness about the dangers of E.coli infections and to urge other parents to seek medical attention promptly if they notice severe symptoms like blood in stools, cessation of urination, or swelling.
