British light-middleweight boxing champion Bilal Fawaz has lived in the United Kingdom for more than two decades but is currently navigating a lengthy process to gain citizenship. His situation is highlighted in a new BBC documentary.

Fawaz is on a 10-year 'route to settlement,' a pathway that requires a decade of lawful residence before an individual can apply for indefinite leave to remain. Following the granting of this status, which removes immigration restrictions, a person can then apply for British citizenship, provided they meet the relevant criteria.

The UK offers other, shorter settlement routes, including five-year pathways for individuals who qualify under specific immigration categories. The route an individual follows is determined by their immigration status, personal circumstances, including family ties, employment, length of residency, and private life in the UK.

It remains unclear whether the 10-year route was the sole option available to Fawaz or the specific reasons why it was applied in his case. The Home Office has stated that the decision to place Fawaz on this particular route was not made by the department.
