British Audiences Favor Classic Action Heroes Over Superheroes, Poll Finds
A new study indicates a significant fatigue with superhero films among UK audiences, particularly younger demographics, with classic action stars like James Bond and Rambo topping preferences.
Classic action stars, including James Bond and Rambo, continue to be favored by British audiences over contemporary superhero films, according to a recent poll. The study reveals a notable weariness with the superhero genre, especially among Gen Z.
Eight out of ten individuals aged 18 to 29 reported feeling tired of superhero movies, a sentiment echoed by seven out of ten across all demographics surveyed. This trend persists despite the commercial success of recent superhero releases, such as the Spider-Man film 'Brand New Day,' which grossed over $2.5 billion globally. The research suggests that British film fans may be losing interest in characters with superpowers.
Primary criticisms of superhero films cited by respondents include predictable storylines and an over-reliance on CGI and visual effects at the expense of plot development. With franchises like Marvel boasting 38 films in their cinematic universes, some viewers feel these movies demand extensive prior knowledge of interconnected narratives or are excessively commercial.
Sean Connery's portrayal of James Bond emerged as the nation's favorite action hero, with 38% of the vote. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones followed closely at 37%, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator secured third place with 34%.
Other popular classic action figures included Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard, Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, and multiple actors who have played James Bond, such as Roger Moore and Daniel Craig. Sylvester Stallone, known for his roles as Rocky and Rambo, ranked seventh.
The study, which polled 2,000 individuals, also found that seven in ten fans believe classic action heroes are more authentic than their super-powered counterparts. An additional six in ten found these traditional action stars to be more appealing. Furthermore, a significant portion of film fans expressed a preference for narratives that explore characters beyond the traditional 'good guy' archetype, with seven in ten agreeing that villains can make more compelling central characters.
Great Action, the organization that conducted the poll, is currently screening a selection of classic action films throughout the autumn. Their programming includes titles such as 'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,' 'Anzio,' and 'The Gunman.'
Kate Gartland of Great Action commented on the findings, stating, "While superheroes may be dominating the box office, our study shows many Brits are looking for a more grounded hero on the telly. At Great Action, we give action fans films with real-life grit and larger-than-life heroes – just a little closer to reality."
