British Army Captain Fined for Punching Soldier After Banter

A decorated British Army Captain, Lee Bush, 43, has been fined £2,900 and ordered to pay £800 in compensation after punching a junior soldier three times in the face during what witnesses described as "light-hearted banter" at a Christmas party in November 2025. The incident occurred at an accommodation block at the 101 Battalion's base at the Army Reserve Centre in Keynsham, Somerset.

Captain Bush, who has prior service in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Estonia, admitted one count of battery at Bulford Military Court in Wiltshire. Group Captain Michaela Blackmore, prosecuting, stated that prior to the event, Bush had joked with Warrant Officer Class One Andrew Ridsdale, saying, "I'll knock you out." Warrant Officer Ridsdale reportedly replied, "yeah right," in a tone that witnesses perceived as joking. Bush then delivered three punches to Warrant Officer Ridsdale's jaw and chin.

The assault left Warrant Officer Ridsdale with headaches severe enough that he was unable to work for two weeks. He recalled Bush punching him once on the chin and once to the left jaw, with the blows only stopping when an intervention occurred. Bush himself described the action as "one jab, followed by two more jabs."

In a service police interview, Bush stated he was engaged in "light-hearted banter" and felt anger in his victim, prompting him to follow up his initial jab with two more. However, Assistant Judge Advocate General John Atwill noted that the "deliberate attack" escalated from banter into violence, which was entirely one-sided. The judge further commented that the offense was aggravated by Warrant Officer Ridsdale being junior in rank and that Bush had consumed alcohol at the time.

Mitigating, Matthew Bolt said Captain Bush was "mortified" by the situation and had never anticipated being in court for hurting someone. Bolt highlighted Bush's long and varied military career since 2000, with no prior disciplinary issues. He also mentioned that Bush was eligible for promotion to Major before this incident, a step that his actions have now cost him. Captain Bush became a Captain in 2022 and joined the reserves the following year. He is trained in counter-IED measures and served in Afghanistan in that capacity. He was also deployed to Estonia during Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The court was informed that the service fine of £2,900 must be paid within 28 days, with non-payment potentially leading to a three-month prison sentence.
