British Airways Flight to Chicago Declares Emergency Over Ireland

A British Airways flight bound for Chicago declared an emergency after a rapid and steep descent while flying over Ireland. The aircraft, BA Flight BA295, a Boeing 777-200ER traveling from London Heathrow to Chicago O'Hare, had climbed to approximately 37,000 feet before unexpectedly beginning its descent.

British Airways stated that the plane experienced a "technical issue," necessitating its return to the UK. Flight tracking data indicated the aircraft dropped around 28,000 feet, reaching an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet within minutes. The crew activated a 7700 emergency squawk, the internationally recognized code for a general emergency.

The aircraft ultimately landed safely back at Heathrow Airport shortly after 5 p.m. local time. The airline confirmed that passengers disembarked normally and that teams were working to arrange alternative travel plans. The specific reason for the emergency has not been publicly confirmed.

While a rapid descent to lower altitudes can be a precautionary measure for suspected cabin pressure problems, allowing for breathable air without supplemental oxygen, there is no confirmation this was the cause of the incident. The Boeing 777-200ER involved in the flight is approximately 30 years old.
