Brit Hume Warns of Potential 'Drubbing' for Republicans in 2026 Midterms

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume stated that Republicans "have to be concerned" about a potentially severe outcome in the 2026 midterm elections. During an appearance on "Special Report with Bret Baier," Hume referenced the 1994 midterms, when Republicans gained control of Congress during Bill Clinton's presidency, as a cautionary example.

"The Republicans have to worry that something like that may happen to them in this race, where not only do they lose the close ones, but they lose a lot that weren’t even thought to be close and you get a big washout," Hume said, adding, "I’m not saying it’s gonna happen, but I think it could happen."

Hume pointed to current polling data that indicates Democrats hold significant advantages on key issues such as foreign policy, gas prices, and inflation. He noted that Republicans are "way underwater by any number of points" across these issues.

The analyst also highlighted concerns regarding former President Donald Trump's polling numbers. While Trump has encouraged voters to support candidates as if he were on the ballot, Hume observed a decline in Trump's support among Republicans since the last election. He cited a reported approval rating of 36%, suggesting that Trump might only mobilize that percentage of the vote while facing disapproval from the remaining 64%. Hume questioned the effectiveness of Trump's prominent role, given these figures, stating, "And it may raise the question in the minds of some people whether he should be out there front and center the way he is, given his standing."
