Brighton Hands Manchester City Second Consecutive League Defeat

Brighton avenged their Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City with a 1-0 victory on Saturday, handing the Premier League leaders a second consecutive league defeat. Yasin Ayari's early strike was the decisive goal, fulfilling manager Fabian Hurzeler's desire for retribution following their midweek penalty shootout loss.

This result marks the first time this season that Manchester City has suffered back-to-back defeats in the league, having begun the campaign with seven consecutive wins. The victory allows Brighton to close the gap on the top of the table, now sitting just two points behind the leaders.

After making significant changes to their lineups for the midweek cup tie, both teams fielded closer to their full-strength sides. Brighton took the lead in the 11th minute. Lewis Dunk released Diego Gomez from a free-kick, and his low cross deflected off Maxim De Cuyper to Ayari, who finished from close range.

City responded positively, with Iliman Ndiaye proving a constant threat. Ndiaye missed a key opportunity to equalize when he headed wide, and later tested goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen with a weaving run. Appeals for a handball against Brighton's Lewis Dunk were dismissed by the referee.

Yasin Ayari's first half goal was all that was required for Brighton to leave as the victors

In the second half, Brighton had a chance to extend their lead when De Cuyper blazed over. City increased the pressure, with Ndiaye hitting the post from a powerful effort that was tipped on by Verbruggen. Further chances fell to City's Nunes and Ndiaye, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Enzo Maresca was in disbelief as his side spurned numerous opportunities to score a goal

Despite late pressure and efforts from O'Reilly and Cherki for City, Brighton held on for the crucial victory. The result leaves the title race open, with rivals Arsenal having the opportunity to move above Manchester City when they play Liverpool on Sunday.
