A Kansas City woman has been excused from jury duty after her summons arrived for the same day as her wedding, which was scheduled to take place in Rome. Katrina Badowski, 35, received a notice last month requiring her to report for one week of jury service starting on a Monday, which was also the day of her wedding to Billie Rodriguez, 42.

Badowski discovered the scheduling conflict on August 14 and shared the notice on TikTok, where her post went viral, accumulating over 1.4 million views. "The odds of you getting summoned for jury duty on your wedding day are low, but never zero," she captioned the video, humorously adding, "The government wants to be involved in my marriage SO BAD."

She explained that she had always been interested in serving as a juror and found the summons ironic, as she had not been called for over a decade. However, due to the nature of the destination wedding, with all flights, venues, and vendors already booked and paid for, attending jury duty was impossible.

In Kansas, individuals who fail to appear for jury duty without informing the court can face fines of $100 per day missed and potential contempt of court charges. Badowski proactively contacted court officials via email to explain her situation.

Following her explanation and the viral nature of her story, Badowski received a response from the court. "Received and excused you from jury duty," the message stated. "Thank you and congratulations."

Other social media users shared similar experiences of jury duty conflicting with significant life events. Comments included instances of being called for jury duty on a birthday, the day of childbirth, and other major milestones. Some users humorously suggested that the court should be invited to the wedding.
