A bride has ignited a firestorm of online controversy after a detailed contract, outlining stringent rules for her bridesmaids, recirculated on social media. The document, reportedly requiring a signature from attendants, includes stipulations on weight fluctuations, alcohol intake, and even sexual activity in the months leading up to the wedding.
The contract, presented as a method to ensure the wedding day proceeded according to the bride's precise vision, begins with expressions of gratitude to the bridesmaids. However, it quickly transitions to a series of demands, one of the most contentious being a clause limiting weight gain to a maximum of 7 pounds (3 kg).
The bride cited concerns about how weight gain might affect wedding photographs, stating she did not want to appear "plump" in images that would last indefinitely. Further restrictions included requirements for bridesmaids to maintain their current hairstyles, with any significant changes needing the bride's explicit approval. This extended to discussions about wigs and extensions, to prevent the bride from having an adverse reaction on the day.
A particularly alarming condition pertained to pregnancy. Bridesmaids were asked to refrain from unprotected sex for three months prior to the wedding unless already pregnant. The bride offered justifications such as the inability to afford alterations to bridesmaid dresses and concerns that a pregnant attendant might disrupt the visual harmony of wedding photos, leading to a "lopsided" appearance.
The contract also detailed expectations for bridesmaids' availability throughout the wedding weekend, encompassing tasks such as venue setup, assisting the bride with dressing, organizing guests for photographs, and helping pack away wedding items post-celebration. They were also instructed to keep their hair and makeup immaculate at all times, as photographs could be taken unexpectedly. Attendance at the rehearsal and a private dinner was mandatory.
Alcohol consumption was also regulated; bridesmaids were permitted a maximum of five units of alcohol at the pre-wedding dinner due to the early start on the wedding day. Once the bridesmaid dresses were donned, they were expected to remain worn for the entire duration of the event.
