A bride-to-be has initiated a widespread online debate after implementing a strict fragrance-free policy for her upcoming wedding and a related brunch. The bride stated that perfumes are a significant trigger for her migraines, causing symptoms that can mimic a stroke.
In a notice accompanying the wedding invitations and on the event website, the bride explained the reasoning behind the request. "Fragrance is my biggest migraine trigger. [I] also get symptoms that mimic a stroke. Hope people take this seriously!" she wrote. A card further elaborated that the bride and members of the bridal party have severe fragrance allergies that can lead to significant health reactions. "Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us create a safe & joyful celebration on our special day," the notice read.
While many online commenters found the initial request to be reasonable, the conversation rapidly escalated. Suggestions emerged that guests should be subject to scent checks upon arrival, avoid scented laundry detergents, and even purchase brand new clothing for the occasion to prevent lingering fragrances.
Some participants proposed rigorous enforcement, including denying entry to guests who violated the policy. One individual suggested appointing a "trusted sniffer" to monitor guests, recounting an instance where a bridesmaid allegedly checked arriving guests for perfume. Those who failed the perceived "sniff test" were reportedly directed to wash off scents before attending.
The discussion also touched upon the broader implications of fragrance-free events. Some shared experiences with similar requests, noting that even clothing worn previously could retain scents. Proposals included asking guests to schedule salon visits at least a week in advance and to refrain from using scented products for a similar period before the event.
Perhaps the most extreme suggestion involved guests purchasing new, inexpensive outfits specifically for the wedding, to be donated afterward. This idea, however, met with considerable skepticism and humor from many online, who found the proposed measures excessive. Mock suggestions included providing hospital gowns or disposable clothing, with questions raised about the practicality of post-event clothing donations.
Amidst the extreme suggestions, some users expressed sympathy for the bride's sensitivities, with one commenter sharing their own experience of severe reactions to strong fragrances. Another user directly stated, "I would rather skip the wedding than be subjected to anyone sniffing me or my body."
