Brewers' Retractable Roof Becomes Unlikely Obstacle in Padres' NLDS Game 1
A controversial rule came into play when a Padres batter's fly ball struck the stadium's roof structure, resulting in an out.
The San Diego Padres faced an unusual setback in Game 1 of their National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, when a potential game-changing hit was nullified due to the stadium's retractable roof.
In the ninth inning, with the Padres trailing 3-2 and a runner on base, batter Ty France launched a towering fly ball towards the left-field corner. France and many on the field believed the ball was a go-ahead home run. However, the ball struck a cable attached to the retractable roof of American Family Field, altering its trajectory and allowing it to be caught by Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio for the second out.
The Padres challenged the ruling, but the umpires upheld the decision. Under American Family Field's ground rules, any ball that strikes the roof, truss, or cable in fair territory remains live. If a fielder makes a catch, it results in an out. The challenge could only address whether the ball hit fair or foul territory, not whether it should have been a home run.
Padres manager Craig Stammen acknowledged the unusual circumstance, noting that the possibility of the ball hitting the roof had been discussed among umpires prior to the game. "We joked about it at the umpire meeting today about what would happen if the ball hit the roof," Stammen said. "And it was unlikely, but it happened."
This incident echoes a similar play from the previous postseason involving the same stadium, where a ball ricocheted off a fielder's glove and the wall, leading to a double play. France's hit, with a launch angle of 49 degrees and an exit velocity of 105 MPH, had exit numbers similar to seven previous home runs hit at American Family Field. Brewers catcher William Contreras also expressed belief that the ball had the potential to leave the park without the roof interference.
Game 2 of the best-of-five NLDS is scheduled for Sunday.
