Brett Baty Adds Shortstop to Defensive Repertoire
Mets manager Andy Green explores infield versatility for the upcoming season.
New York Mets infielder Brett Baty played shortstop on Saturday, adding a sixth defensive position to his repertoire as the team evaluates options for the upcoming season. Manager Andy Green cited the potential flexibility this could offer, particularly for days when regular shortstop Francisco Lindor requires rest.
Green stated that Baty possesses the necessary skill set to perform at the position. "I think some of the things we’re doing in these last couple of days gives us a look at those things and to look at different possibilities," Green said prior to the Mets’ 7-1 victory over the Nationals. He added that these games, with no playoff implications for either team, allow the organization to explore future strategic options without compromising current performance.
Baty, who has been a productive hitter since the All-Star break, has also started games this season at first base, second base, and third base, in addition to left and right field. Green indicated that the experimentation with Baty at shortstop is likely to continue into spring training next year.
"I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of really good big league infielders," Green commented. "[Bench coach] Kai [Correa] has as well, and [third base coach] Tim Leiper has too, and we all see in him the athleticism necessary to defend the field there, not on a regular basis, but on a step-in and fill-in basis. Brett is incredibly athletic."
Green views Baty's versatility as a significant asset, complemented by his offensive performance, which included an .890 OPS since July 10. "You look around baseball, and the best teams have someone like this who has the athleticism to do all of these things," Green noted.
In related news, infielder Ronny Mauricio started at second base and hit home runs from both sides of the plate. Green acknowledged Mauricio's athleticism, stating he will have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the team next year. The start time for Sunday's game was moved up to 1:05 p.m. due to weather concerns.
