Breece Hall Suffers Thigh Injury in Jets' Loss
Running back Breece Hall left Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions with a thigh injury, adding to the Jets' offensive challenges.
New York Jets running back Breece Hall sustained a thigh injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. The injury occurred as Hall attempted a run from the Detroit 4-yard line that resulted in no gain. He was unable to finish the game.
Hall's performance on Sunday was limited, with 32 yards on 13 carries. This marks the second consecutive game where Hall has struggled after exceeding 100 rushing yards in the season opener.
"It sucks, but it’s part of the game," Hall said after the game. "I felt something when I was running, and then got tackled and planted it and felt something. So, we’ll see."
The Jets also experienced an injury to left guard Dylan Parham, who left the game in the third quarter with a left knee injury. This injury is considered potentially more serious than Hall's.
Offensive challenges for the Jets were compounded by a depleted receiving corps. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who was listed as questionable with a finger injury, was inactive for the game. Mitchell sustained the injury in practice on Thursday when his finger caught in a teammate's uniform. Head coach Aaron Glenn indicated that the injury was not believed to be a fracture.
Mitchell has been a key target for the Jets, leading the team with 15 targets and nine receptions for 123 yards. He practiced on Friday with his hand heavily wrapped.
The Jets were already without several wide receivers due to injuries, including Omar Cooper Jr., Tim Patrick, and Arian Smith, who are on injured reserve. The team relied on starter Garrett Wilson and a mix of role players. Sterling Shepard and Jamaal Pritchett were elevated from the practice squad. Shepard made one reception for 3 yards and a crucial two-point conversion that tied the game at 24-24.
Tight end Mason Taylor also missed the game due to a thumb injury.
On a positive note, rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and edge rusher Joseph Ossai made their debuts for the Jets after missing the first two games. Ponds saw limited action on defense and some snaps on special teams.
In the second quarter, tight end Jelani Woods recorded his first offensive touch of the season with a 20-yard reception. This marked the first game since 2019 that the Jets had multiple tight ends score touchdowns, with Kenyon Sadiq and Jeremy Ruckert also finding the end zone.
The Jets' defense extended its streak without an interception to 20 games, covering 632 pass attempts by opposing quarterbacks. Inactive players for the Jets, in addition to Mitchell and Taylor, included running back Kene Nwangwu, cornerback Nahshon Wright, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, and kicker Blake Grupe.
