Breastfeeding Models Make LA Runway Debut

Models took to a Los Angeles runway last month with their breastfeeding infants, in an event organized to challenge societal perceptions and make breastfeeding mothers more visible. The "Breastfeeding on the Runway" event, held at the historic Leimert Park in South LA, featured four mothers who breastfed their babies as part of the fashion presentation.

The initiative was spearheaded by Breanna Kuimi, a nurse, lactation consultant, and founder of the nonprofit Anew Life, which supports mothers navigating breastfeeding and postpartum life, particularly in underserved communities. Kuimi stated that she felt a lack of visibility as a mother and nurse in Los Angeles and wanted to create a moment that celebrated motherhood and breastfeeding in an unexpected public space.

"We simply refuse to accept the idea that breastfeeding mothers should be invisible," Kuimi wrote. "That is the revolution I wanted to start."

The event coincided with August's National Breastfeeding Month and Black Breastfeeding Week, adding a layer of significance for Kuimi, who is a Black mother and healthcare professional. The choice of Leimert Park, a historic center of Black culture in Los Angeles, was also intentional.

Several designers and brands reportedly supported the event, signaling a potential shift in how fashion integrates maternal experiences. This initiative preceded a similar presentation by London designer Di Petsa during London Fashion Week on September 21, though Kuimi emphasized that the Los Angeles event pioneered the concept of a nonprofit-led runway featuring mothers breastfeeding their babies.

The "Breastfeeding on the Runway" event aimed to convey a message that motherhood belongs in public spaces and that women should not have to choose between being mothers and being seen. The organizers described the event as a success, turning the runway into a platform for visibility and celebration.
