Bre Tiesi Describes Grueling 'Special Forces' Experience in Malaysian Jungle
The 'Selling Sunset' star details the harsh conditions, unexpected fears, and camaraderie forged during filming.
Bre Tiesi, known for her role in 'Selling Sunset,' described her experience on 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test' as a challenging ordeal, particularly highlighting the brutal environment of the Malaysian jungle where the season was filmed. Tiesi noted that the jungle presented the most difficult conditions compared to other filming locations in the show's history.
"We were by far the worst one," Tiesi stated in an interview. "They literally said the absolute worst place you could possibly be is the jungle. I think Morocco would have been better. The sand, of course, is difficult, but nothing like that jungle. Those elements were insane; that humidity, just everything. It was brutal."
The reality television star joined other celebrities, including Ruby Rose, Candace Cameron Bure, and George Santos, for the show's fifth season. The contestants underwent rigorous challenges designed by directing staff members Mark “Billy” Billingham, Jason “Foxy” Fox, Rodolfo “Rudy” Reyes, and Jovon “Q” Quarles.
Tiesi shared details about the living conditions, describing the barracks as "horrific." She recounted encountering wildlife such as cobras and scorpions, and the constant struggle with heat and humidity. "You’re showering with scorpions falling out of trees. It was diabolical," she said.
She also revealed an unexpected fear of heights that surfaced during a challenge. "I had no idea I had a fear of heights at all," Tiesi admitted. "I feel like it probably would have been better if I knew going in, but I was just proud that I was able to get myself over the railing and just do it." She found support from fellow contestant Collin Gosselin during this difficult moment, who helped distract her by talking about her son.
Despite the hardships, Tiesi found the experience transformative. "It completely changed me in so many ways I never thought it would," she explained. "It was just deep. It was heavy. It’s a mirror to a lot of things that I haven’t thought about, or processed, or done anything with since I was a kid." She emphasized the development of "trauma bonding" among the contestants due to the shared extreme situations.
Tiesi also touched on the departures of fellow contestants, expressing sadness over Ruby Rose's exit. She noted that Rose, who is vegan, may have faced additional dietary challenges in the jungle environment. The show also saw self-eliminations from LeSean McCoy and George Santos.
Reflecting on the show's impact, Tiesi stated that it provided a unique perspective, making everyday challenges seem less significant. "I think it really changed not taking [the little things] seriously, and really being in the moment and appreciating what I have and where we’re at. And knowing that if I can do that, I can literally do anything."
Tiesi mentioned that her son, Legendary, initially had reservations about her participation but became excited once he saw the show. She also confirmed that she informed her real estate clients about her absence for filming, unlike some other cast members who reportedly kept their participation a secret.
New episodes of 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test' air Thursdays on Fox.
