Brazilian freesurfer Victor Bernardo, 28, and his wife, Johnni Bufkin Bernardo, sustained serious injuries in a car accident that occurred in Southern California on August 16. Filmmaker Logan Dulien shared news of the crash, describing it as one that "easily could have been fatal."

Bernardo was airlifted to a hospital, while his wife was transported by ambulance to a trauma center. Both have undergone multiple emergency surgeries and remain in intensive care units. A fundraiser has been established to assist with their extensive medical bills and daily living expenses as they are unable to work.

Organizers of the fundraiser stated that the couple is expected to be out of work for at least six months to a year and will likely require ongoing medical procedures, rehabilitation, and medication. Specific details regarding the location and circumstances of the crash have not been publicly released out of respect for the couple's privacy.

Bernardo, known for his career as a standout freesurfer outside the traditional competitive circuit, was recently announced as an invited competitor for the 2026 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy. He had expressed excitement about the event, particularly about bringing his mother on her first international trip.

Supporters and the surf community are rallying to provide assistance during the couple's challenging recovery journey. A statement from the fundraiser organizers conveyed gratitude for the support, stating, "We know that they will get through this stronger than ever."
