Brazilian Nurse Dies of Shrimp Allergy During Portugal Honeymoon

A Brazilian nurse has died in Portugal from a severe allergic reaction to shrimp, eleven days after marrying her husband. Amanda Nascimento, 29, and her husband, Tiago Nascimento, were on their honeymoon in Leiria, Portugal, when the incident occurred on Wednesday.

The couple had visited a restaurant for lunch, where Amanda consumed shrimp and other seafood. According to her husband, she had asked restaurant staff about the ingredients and believed her dish contained only fish. Hours later, around 4:30 p.m. local time, she began experiencing an allergic reaction.

Amanda was initially taken to a hospital in the Leiria area. Due to the severity of her condition, she required a transfer to Coimbra University Hospital, located about 49 miles north. However, she suffered cardiac arrest en route and passed away before reaching the facility.

Amanda's brother-in-law told Brazilian news outlet G1 that she had a known allergy to shrimp. Her husband described her as an "extraordinary person, a sweet, humble woman who always cared about everyone." He also noted her passion for her nursing profession and her Catholic faith, stating she died while doing what she loved most: traveling.

The couple, who married on October 10, 2026, in Brazil, were scheduled to return to their home country on Friday. Amanda had been working as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Mantevida Hospital in the Federal District since May 2025. The hospital issued a statement remembering her "presence, commitment, and humanity."
