Brazil Election: Lula Faces Challenge from Bolsonaro's Son

Brazil's upcoming election features a significant challenge for 80-year-old Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is aiming for a fourth term as president. His opponent is Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the country's jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro. This election marks a point where a candidate trailing after the first round has never before managed to overturn the deficit and win in the second round.

Bolsonaro's supporters have expressed optimism about his potential to bring change to Brazil. They point to his promises of a tough crackdown on organized crime, alongside tax and public spending cuts. On the eve of the polls, Bolsonaro campaigned in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, a state considered crucial for presidential hopefuls since the 1980s. He shared a social media video with supporters stating, "The time is almost here. There are only a few hours left before we shape the future of our nation for the next 30 or 40 years."

Supporters of Flávio Bolsonaro have rallied in national colors, expressing a desire for change. One supporter in Barra de Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, where Jair Bolsonaro owns a home, stated, "Brazil needs change, and Flávio is the person that represents that today, after so many years of the Left destroying the economy and the country." Another voter highlighted Flávio Bolsonaro's pledges to combat violence, terrorism, and narco-trafficking, as well as reduce interest rates, as key reasons for their support. Flávio Bolsonaro has also pledged to secure the release of his father, who is currently serving a sentence under house arrest due to poor health.
