A large fight broke out among spectators at a FIFA Fanzone on Washington D.C.'s National Mall on Monday during the U.S. Men's National Team's World Cup match against Belgium. Video footage captured fans scuffling and throwing punches in the area, which was set up to broadcast the tournament's games on a large jumbotron.
The confrontation reportedly began with an argument between two individuals and quickly escalated, involving numerous fans. Images from the event show people engaged in physical altercations, with one instance of a man being put in a headlock.
Authorities confirmed that one person was escorted from the fan zone by U.S. Park Police, though it remains unclear if that individual was involved in the brawl or if any injuries occurred.
The FIFA Fanzone has been a popular gathering spot for fans throughout the World Cup, drawing large crowds to watch the U.S. team's progress. Despite the U.S. team's elimination after the 4-1 loss to Belgium, the fan park is scheduled to continue showing the remaining quarter-final, semi-final, and final matches. The World Cup coincides with the America 250 celebrations, and organizers had envisioned the fan zone as a unifying space for international visitors.
