A large-scale brawl broke out among soccer fans at a FIFA Fan Zone on Washington D.C.'s National Mall on Monday during the U.S. Men's National Team's (USMNT) World Cup match against Belgium. Video footage captured numerous fans scuffling, with some throwing punches and plastic bottles.

The altercation reportedly began with an argument between two individuals and escalated into a wider melee. At one point, one man was seen putting another in a headlock before both ended up on the ground. A U.S. Park Police spokesperson confirmed that one person was escorted from the fan zone, though it remains unclear if that individual was involved in the fight or if any injuries occurred.

Thousands of fans had gathered at the National Mall to watch the World Cup games on a large jumbotron. Despite the U.S. team's elimination from the tournament in the round of 16, the fan park will continue to show the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final matches. The World Cup event is also being held in conjunction with America 250 celebrations, marking the nation's 250th anniversary.

"The FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Zone on the National Mall will help welcome the world to America during the nation’s 250th year," Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, said in a release. "This will be a place where people from every corner of the globe come together through sport, freedom, and shared human experience in the shadow of America’s most iconic monuments."

The USMNT lost the match to Belgium with a score of 4-1. Belgium's goals were scored by Charles De Ketelaere, who scored twice, Hans Vanaken, and Romelu Lukaku. Malik Tillman scored the lone goal for the United States. The U.S. team has not advanced past the round of 16 since 2002. Belgium is scheduled to play Spain in the next round.
