Brandon Spikes Claims He Took a Pay Cut from Florida to NFL
Former Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes joked about pre-NIL payments while discussing his college and professional careers.
Former NFL linebacker Brandon Spikes stated that he experienced a pay cut when transitioning from the University of Florida to the New England Patriots, humorously referencing the financial landscape of college football before Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals.
Spikes, a former five-star recruit who played for Florida alongside notable players like Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin, discussed his career on the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast. He recalled his time with the Gators, during which he was a two-time All-American and a two-time national champion. Upon being drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Spikes claimed he "took a f—ing pay cut when I left 'Gainesvegas,'" referring to Gainesville, Florida.
This comment alluded to the practice of under-the-table payments that were common in college football prior to the widespread adoption of NIL. Spikes suggested that the financial compensation was substantial enough during his college years to make his NFL salary feel like a reduction, particularly when factoring in high state income taxes in Massachusetts, which he called "Taxachusetts."
While Spikes denied clearing seven figures during his college tenure at Florida, he implied that arrangements were made to support his family, including facilitating his mother's relocation to Gainesville. He jokingly noted that the university ensured he still received "home-cooked meals."
Spikes played seven seasons in the NFL, spending five of those with the New England Patriots. His comments highlight the unofficial financial arrangements that players sometimes benefited from before NIL rules were formally introduced, suggesting that the era of players profiting off their athletic status in college predates current regulations.
