Brandon Aiyuk's contract dispute continues to be a significant talking point as the San Francisco 49ers commence their training camp, with the team providing no new information on the wide receiver's status. Aiyuk remains on the reserve/left squad list, a situation that has persisted since the conclusion of the 2025 season. If he does not rejoin the team, he would likely need to formally apply to the NFL for reinstatement to be eligible to play in 2026, having missed the entirety of the previous season due to the standoff.
Alternatively, Aiyuk could initiate a return by reporting to training camp or informing the 49ers of his intention to do so. The discord between the receiver and the team has reportedly been escalating for approximately a year. The situation appeared to reach a critical point last July when San Francisco voided the remaining guaranteed money in Aiyuk's contract after he did not participate in rehabilitation for a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee.
Aiyuk has made several social media posts that seem to allude to the uncertainty surrounding his future with the 49ers, further fueling speculation. Former NFL wide receiver Roddy White is among those who have commented on the situation, suggesting that the 49ers mishandled Aiyuk's recovery and potentially complicated any trade possibilities.
"I think this situation has been handled wrongly by the 49ers," White stated. "They should've been more patient with Aiyuk and his situation. They should have done all they could to get him back on the field to give him an opportunity to show he can still play football. When you have a guy who is angry and just wants to leave, it's hard to get any compensation for him."
The 49ers' recent decision to bring back Deebo Samuel seemingly prompted a cryptic Instagram post from Aiyuk, which read, "San Fran wanna see a real reunion?"
Earlier reports indicated Aiyuk's interest in joining the Commanders, but that possibility has reportedly diminished after he publicly commented on Washington's quarterback Jayden Daniels. Aiyuk and Daniels were college teammates at Arizona State in 2019. Daniels has since downplayed any lingering issues, stating that he and Aiyuk had addressed matters privately.
General manager John Lynch addressed the team's focus on players present, telling reporters on July 25, "I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players who are here. We wish him well, we wish his family well."
The 49ers' wide receiver corps also faced an early setback when Ricky Pearsall experienced swelling in the PCL of his right knee, leading to his placement on injured reserve on August 1. Pearsall had been positioned to be a key contributor after injuries limited him in his first two seasons.
Aiyuk's participation in the 2024 season was limited to seven games before he was sidelined by injury. In the preceding year, he achieved a career-best 1,342 receiving yards and earned second-team All-Pro honors.
