Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has amplified speculation about his strained relationship with the San Francisco 49ers through a series of cryptic social media posts. The messages, shared on Instagram, were widely interpreted as indirect criticisms of head coach Kyle Shanahan, particularly in light of Shanahan's recent severe car accident.
Aiyuk posted two racing-themed sentiments: "You can’t win the race if you crash out," followed by, "Keep yo head up and stay in yo own lane / You gone win." While the posts did not name Shanahan directly, their timing and wording led to interpretations as jabs at the coach, who is still recovering from a July 14 collision. Ari Meirov of MySportsUpdate noted the posts and characterized them as apparent jabs at Shanahan.
Shanahan sustained multiple injuries in the crash, including a severe concussion, a broken nose, three fractured ribs, and a broken hand. He also suffered facial injuries requiring over 40 stitches. Shanahan has publicly stated that taking his eyes off the road contributed to the accident, veering into oncoming traffic.
This latest social media activity follows a pattern of public criticism from Aiyuk towards the 49ers organization this summer. He has previously referred to team officials as "stupid and dumb" and "creepy predators" online and declared an intent to never conduct business with the team again, regardless of financial implications.
Aiyuk had expressed a desire to be released by San Francisco to join the Washington Commanders. However, that potential move has become less certain. Adam Schefter reported that the possibility of Aiyuk landing with Washington has "gone off the track." Aiyuk further complicated matters by posting a social media message directed at Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former teammate at Arizona State, before later portraying himself as the missing piece for Washington.
Reports suggest that Aiyuk's online behavior has negatively impacted his market value, raising questions about his willingness to play. Washington has reportedly shifted its focus to free-agent receiver Stefon Diggs. While Aiyuk's recent posts could be viewed as generic motivational messages, their context within his ongoing dispute with the 49ers and Shanahan's accident has deepened the controversy surrounding the receiver. His public social media campaign appears to be not only harming his relationship with the 49ers but potentially closing off his desired exit route.
