San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has intensified his dispute with the team, releasing a video in which he describes head coach Kyle Shanahan as having the temperament of a "f---ing toddler." Aiyuk, who has publicly expressed his desire to be traded, made the remarks in a video posted to YouTube.
Aiyuk stated that his relationship with the 49ers is "not cool" and indicated he will not return to the team facility except on October 19. He also revealed he has fired his agent, who also represented 49ers General Manager John Lynch. Aiyuk alluded to an incident where he claims Lynch, described as a "big old white boy. White man. Former NFL safety," arrived unannounced at his home.
The receiver has been vocal about his preferred trade destination: the Washington Commanders. Aiyuk and Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels were college teammates at Arizona State and remain friends. He has posted messages on social media supporting the Commanders, including "Go Commanders! Raise Hail! Take Command!"
The situation has been ongoing, with Aiyuk having previously called the 49ers "dumb" and "stupid" for his current contract situation. He believes the team is hesitant to release him due to concerns about his potential performance elsewhere.
Aiyuk's current contract status is complicated by the 49ers voiding his remaining guaranteed money after he did not participate in rehabilitation sessions for injuries sustained during the 2024 season, including a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee. The team placed him on the Reserve/Left Squad list in December for not reporting to the facility for his rehab. According to ESPN, Aiyuk must file reinstatement paperwork, and the 49ers are not obligated to release him until he does.
Before his injuries, Aiyuk recorded 24 catches for 374 yards in the 2024 season. He had a breakout year in 2023, accumulating 1,342 receiving yards on 75 receptions with seven touchdowns, helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl.
