Bradley Beal Prioritizes Health Over Championship Chase with Clippers
Three-time All-Star Bradley Beal explains his decision to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, citing a focus on availability and managing injuries.
Bradley Beal has opted to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers on a two-year, $13.1 million deal, a move that might surprise some given the team's recent turmoil and diminished championship prospects. The Clippers faced significant penalties, including the loss of five first-round draft picks and a $30 million fine, stemming from a salary cap circumvention scandal, which also led to owner Steve Ballmer's suspension. Several key players, including Ivica Zubac, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard, are no longer with the team.
Beal, 33, acknowledged his age and a desire to prioritize his physical well-being. "Obviously, I’m getting older," Beal told reporters. "I can go try to win and go chase winning, and I had plenty of opportunities to do that. But I can’t be of service to them, either, if I’m not healthy. My biggest thing is being healthy and making sure that I can consistently play, consistently be available."
Despite a career marked by impressive scoring, including consecutive seasons averaging over 30 points from 2019-2021, Beal has struggled with injuries, missing at least 29 games in each of the last five seasons. He is currently dealing with right knee inflammation, which will sideline him for the start of training camp.
"It’s been a knock on me the last four or five years. And I can’t shy away from that," Beal stated. "My biggest thing is who gives me the best advantage of being available, being myself consistently. And I have a great relationship with the staff here. And I entrusted them with putting me in that position."
He expressed concern about the potential stress of starting over with a new team. "I feel like if I went anywhere else, I’d be starting all over again, kind of putting a lot of unnecessary stress and pressure on myself to perform and do things. And I can’t answer and necessarily check that box yet. So giving myself time to be able to check some of those boxes before making those types of moves."
Last season, Beal played only six games for the Clippers due to a season-ending left hip fracture. His decision appears to reflect a conscious shift towards prioritizing his mental and physical health over the immediate pursuit of a championship. Teams like the Miami Heat, who recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Celtics and Warriors, had reportedly shown interest in acquiring Beal during free agency.
