Boy Suffers Severe Burns in Viral "Fire Challenge"
Officials in New Orleans are warning parents about the dangers of a social media trend that has led to a 9-year-old boy sustaining burns over 70% of his body.
A 9-year-old boy has suffered burns to more than 70% of his body after participating in a dangerous viral social media trend known as the “fire challenge,” officials reported. The child is experiencing “unbearable pain,” and authorities are emphasizing the severe risks associated with the trend.
New Orleans Fire Department Chief Roman Nelson and New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick issued a joint warning video, urging families to discuss the dangers of such online activities with their children. The “fire challenge” involves individuals setting themselves ablaze and then attempting to extinguish the flames quickly, a practice described by officials as extremely dangerous and not humorous.
“It’s very dangerous. It is not fun, and it is not funny,” Kirkpatrick stated in the video address. Nelson added, “Kids, don’t fall for this gimmick and don’t feel peer pressure to take part in it. Your life is not worth it.”
The National Library of Medicine describes the challenge as a phenomenon where a participant applies an accelerant, such as isopropyl alcohol or acetone, to their body and then ignites it, attempting to put out the flames before incurring serious burns.
Officials are advising parents to have open conversations with their children about the potential consequences of engaging in extreme behaviors promoted on social media platforms. The New Orleans Fire Department has not yet provided further comment on the incident.
