Dáithí Mac Gabhann has seen the "sparkle" return to his eyes following a heart transplant, his father Máirtín Mac Gabhann stated. The family shared on Tuesday that Dáithí was "at the beginning of his recovery" after the procedure, which took place at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Máirtín Mac Gabhann described the past eight years as a "rollercoaster" for the family. He noted that Dáithí, who understood the "consequences of things going wrong," had been "very nervous" before the operation. Despite the ongoing recovery, he added, "We couldn't have asked for better, so far."

The family has expressed gratitude to the hospital staff, whom they referred to as their "only hope" throughout the eight-year wait for a donor heart. Dáithí's father shared that the young boy recently enjoyed a "sweetie party" to watch the World Cup final. He also acknowledged the emotional toll of the long wait, admitting, "Every time I allow myself to smile I kind of rein it in a bit because I know it's so early in his recovery."
