Boy on Bail Accused of Fatal Stabbing of Sydney Father

A 13-year-old boy, who cannot be identified due to legal reasons, has been charged with murder after allegedly fatally stabbing 36-year-old Joshua Smith near Mount Druitt train station on Friday evening. Smith, a father of three, was reportedly walking home from work when he stopped to offer assistance to a group of young people.

According to police, Smith approached a group and offered to help them get home, intending to withdraw money from an ATM. It is alleged that another group took offense to the interaction, leading to a confrontation. Smith was then allegedly attacked by this second group, sustaining two fatal stab wounds.

Mount Druitt Police Area Commander Darrin Batchelor described the incident as "absolutely senseless" and highlighted the tragic loss for the victim's family. "A family has lost a father, a son, a brother, and now they will have to live a future without their father, these children," Batchelor stated.

CCTV footage played a role in identifying the alleged assailant. The 13-year-old boy was arrested on Sunday when he arrived at Mount Druitt Police Station to report for bail on a separate, unrelated offense. Police allege he was in breach of his bail conditions at the time of the alleged murder. He faces charges of murder, breach of bail, and robbery related to the prior incident.

In connection with the stabbing, a 16-year-old was also arrested and charged as an accessory to murder. Police reportedly found the alleged murder weapon in a drain near the teenager's apartment. Both youths appeared in children's court on Monday.

Authorities are seeking two other individuals believed to have been present during the attack and allegedly involved in the assault. Police have urged these individuals to surrender. Twelve other young people are said to have witnessed the alleged incident.
