Boy Dies After Drowning in Australian Drainpipe

A nine-year-old boy has died after drowning in a drainpipe in Australia's Northern Territory. The incident occurred at the Katherine Low Level Nature Reserve on Tuesday.

Police were alerted around 5:15 p.m. when the boy entered the drainpipe and did not resurface. He had reportedly been swimming at the weir when he disappeared down the pipe. His family held a vigil at the scene while police divers conducted a search. Tragically, the boy's body was discovered at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

NT Police Commander Neil Hayes described the event as an "incredibly tragic incident" and confirmed that welfare support is being provided to the responding officers. "Our thoughts are with the boy's family," Commander Hayes stated.

An investigation into the incident has been launched by NT Police, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
