An 8-year-old boy died Tuesday morning after a tree fell at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts, striking him and a camp counselor. The counselor sustained minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

The incident occurred when a large branch fell, striking the boy, and then a secondary fall created a domino effect, according to Fire Chief Neil McPherson. First responders arrived to find the child with life-threatening injuries and the adult with less serious injuries.

The boy was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The YMCA confirmed the adult victim was treated for minor injuries and released.

West Suburban YMCA President and CEO Jack Fucci stated that the entire YMCA family is grieving the loss. "We are keeping the camper’s family foremost in our thoughts at this extraordinarily difficult time," he said in a statement. The organization is providing grief counseling and support resources to staff, campers, and their families.

Wayland officials also extended their condolences. "Our Wayland community is grieving today, and thinking of those who lost so much as a result of this tragic accident," McPherson added. "I encourage anyone who is experiencing overwhelming grief or anxiety to talk to someone, reach out for help, and to remember that we are the strongest when we stand together as a community."

Camp Chickami will remain closed for the remainder of the week following the incident.
