A six-year-old boy has died from injuries he sustained several days prior in a driftwood accident at a Washington beach. Killian Gonzales had been hospitalized since July 8, when a large log fell while he was playing at Little Squalicum Beach in Bellingham.

His mother, Sonja McCartney, told news outlets that Killian was exploring near a driftwood fort with his sister and a babysitter when the log collapsed. The child attempted to flee but was struck in the back of the head and trapped beneath the timber. Emergency crews responded and began life-saving measures before Killian’s parents arrived. He was subsequently flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he remained in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

According to his family, the impact resulted in catastrophic injuries, including multiple skull fractures and severe brain trauma. Physicians monitored him closely for swelling. On Sunday afternoon, his family confirmed his death.

A GoFundMe campaign established to assist with medical expenses has raised over $42,000 as of Monday morning. The fundraiser stated the goal is to help with medical, food, and gas expenses for the family during this difficult time.
