Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina, 34, has denied assaulting a man outside a petrol station, a court heard on Tuesday. Cordina appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court and pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault by beating.
He was charged alongside Jamie O'Brien, 32, also from Pentwyn, who faces assault charges in connection with the same incident. O'Brien did not enter a plea during the hearing. The court previously indicated that the offenses for which the two men are charged are alleged to be against each other.
Cordina's legal representative stated that the second assault charge Cordina faces "emanates from one continued incident." The former super-featherweight world champion was granted unconditional bail until his trial, scheduled for October 13. O'Brien's case was adjourned until August 26.
Cordina was reportedly due to fight for the WBO lightweight title in the United States on July 4. However, he recently announced via social media that his application for a U.S. visa had been refused.
