Professional boxer Edgar Berlanga has been charged with aggravated battery and battery after allegedly assaulting the mother of his child in Florida on Oct. 18. Berlanga, 29, was accused of striking the woman with an open hand while they were in a vehicle in Polk County, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the California Post. The affidavit states that Berlanga then retrieved a pistol from a cupholder and struck the woman in the forehead with its magazine well. When the woman attempted to exit the vehicle, Berlanga allegedly grabbed her arm to prevent her from leaving.
The woman reportedly managed to break free and ran to a nearby 7-Eleven, where witnesses called authorities. Law enforcement officers observed swelling and bruising on the woman's forehead, a torn shirt sleeve, and an apparent bruise on her left inner arm, according to the affidavit.
A warrant for Berlanga's arrest was issued on Oct. 23, and he surrendered to authorities on Monday. He was released from custody on Tuesday and is scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 17. A request for comment from Berlanga's attorney was not immediately returned.
Berlanga, who holds a professional record of 24 wins and 2 losses, notably faced Canelo Alvarez in September 2024 in Las Vegas, losing by unanimous decision. He has since compiled a 2-1 record in subsequent fights.
