Boxer Billy Joe Saunders Sentenced for Role in Baby Shower Brawl
Former world champion received a suspended jail sentence for assaulting others with beer bottles during a violent incident.
Former boxing world champion Billy Joe Saunders has been sentenced to 15 months in jail, suspended for 18 months, for his role in a mass brawl at a baby shower. The 37-year-old admitted to using beer bottles as weapons on three occasions during the chaotic event, which took place on November 27, 2021, at Poppy's Club in Bulkington, Warwickshire.
Warwick Crown Court heard that the incident involved nine men and saw one individual stabbed through the hand with a flick knife. Another man was alleged to have been seen with a gun. Saunders was one of five defendants who pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
CCTV footage shown in court depicted a brawl erupting after midnight. Saunders, described by a witness as being "drunk" and "derogatory towards Irish people," was seen emptying a beer bottle near the bar to use it as a weapon. He also reportedly smashed bottles across the room and delivered a series of punches to multiple men.
His defense attorney stated that Saunders' life had been in turmoil following his first career loss to Canelo Alvarez in May 2021, an event that resulted in a fractured eye socket and effectively ended his professional boxing career. This loss, combined with a period of significant weight gain and increased alcohol consumption, contributed to his state at the time of the brawl.
His Honour Judge Thomas Rochford acknowledged Saunders' skill and repute as a boxer but noted his responsibility to manage his emotions, stating that he was involved at a "more serious level than three of those with you today" due to his use of a bottle and significant involvement, although he did not initiate the fighting.
Saunders was ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £1,000 fine, and will complete 200 hours of unpaid work. His defense indicated that he has since lost weight, abstained from alcohol, and is back in training with the aim of returning to professional boxing.
Co-defendant Audie Knowles was jailed for 15 months for repeated use of a bottle during the brawl. Other defendants received suspended sentences and community orders for their involvement. Separately, Saunders had previously pleaded guilty to illegally using dogs to hunt and kill hares, an offense that occurred after the baby shower brawl and was not considered during this sentencing.
