Boston Program Offering Immigrant Activist Training Sparks Criticism

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu's administration is funding a leadership program for immigrants that offers scholarships and training in civic engagement and community organizing. The Immigrants Lead Boston program, overseen by the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement, is designed to identify and train emerging leaders within the city's immigrant communities.
Participants in the 10-week program engage with city officials and receive instruction aimed at empowering them to advocate for immigrant populations and organize within their neighborhoods. The program includes a $575 scholarship for participants.
The initiative has drawn criticism from some online, who contend that the program's focus on immigrants and its taxpayer-funded nature exclude U.S. citizens from a city-backed leadership development opportunity. Online commentary included accusations that the program is a "political pipeline built to shut citizens out of their own city" and that it discriminates against U.S.-born residents.
Similar programs and policies offering benefits to immigrants have been a point of contention in other Democratic-led states. Recently, the Justice Department filed lawsuits against Vermont, Connecticut, and New York over laws that allegedly prioritize tuition benefits for undocumented immigrants over U.S. citizens. The department has also challenged tuition benefits for immigrants in the country illegally in other states.
